Our Live Green strategy was launched in 2010 with the aims of
reducing our carbon footprint and energy costs of the organisation and our 6,000+ residents.
The main delivery mechanism for the Live Green strategy is the Power Roofs project, with the aim of over 500 homes in South Yorkshire to be powered by solar electricity by 2012.
The objectives for the project are to:
- Reduce fuel poverty for residents – For the project as a whole it is anticipated that year one total electricity savings across 300 retrofit properties will be £40,000
- Reduce SYHA's stock CO2 by 375t per annum by 2012
- Create local green collar jobs and expertise

Power Roofs has attracted lots of attention from the local and national press and from other landlords keen to reduce the impact of high electricity costs to their tenants.
Penny Smart, an SYHA resident from Sevenairs Road in Beighton was interviewed by BBC2 Newsnight for a feature relating to our Power Roofs project and the Feed in Tariff.Penny said that she was happy she had chosen to have the PV installed and was confident that with the lifestyle changes she was making to get the best out of the PV and generally reduce her electricity use, she would cut her electricity costs.
