Westmeads Festivities

Young and old SYHA residents joined together to deck the halls with boughs of holly.

Young homeless people from the Forge Project in Barnsley headed down the road to Westmeads, an SYHA award winning Extra Care Housing Scheme, to spread early Christmas cheer! The young people rolled up their sleeves and got busy, helping the older residents to trim up the large atrium of the building. Westmeads, has been open for just under two years, is home to 50 people over the age of 55 and has facilities open to public including a hairdressers and café.This year, Christmas decorations at Westmeads include two 10ft Christmas trees and three floors of decoration!

There’s a great atmosphere, especially at lunch time when the older residents showed their appreciation to the young volunteers by buying them a festive lunch from the in-house café.

The café is open 9-5 Monday-Friday. If you’re in the Royston area, pop in for a freshly prepared two course meal or a delicious home made fresh cream scone with a cup of tea.

Joanne Fieldsend, SYHA Forge - Project Manager commented:

‘This has been a fantastic opportunity for two very different groups of people to come together and have a very enjoyable day of Christmas preparations. The young people have been really looking forward to spending the day with the residents at Westmeads and getting involved in making the building look festive. We really hope that this is the start of a long period of our two projects working together.’
