Can I buy my home

A relatively small number of SYHA tenants may be able to buy their home under a scheme called the Right to Acquire. This may change in the future if Government policy changes

To have the right to acquire you must:

  • Be a secure or assured tenant (it will say on your tenancy agreement what type of tenancy you have); and
  • Have spent a total of five years as a public sector tenant, or two years if you were a tenant before 18th January 2005; and
  • Live in a self contained house or flat which is your only or main home; and
  • Be the named tenant of a home that has been built or purchased by SYHA on or after the 1 April 1997 through a kind of grant provided by the Housing Corporation or a Local Authority, or the named tenant of a home transferred from a local council to SYHA on or after 1 April 1997.

In addition, some people and homes are not eligible for the right to acquire. For example if you are an undischarged bankrupt or if your home is designed for elderly people or people with physical disabilities.

If you have the Right to Acquire and want to buy your home you will receive a discount on the price of the house. The amount depends on the area where you live.If you do not have Right to Acquire then you cannot currently buy your home.
