Gorgeous Green Homes in Royston

SYHA near completion of 22 energy efficient family homes in Royston as part of Barnsely Council's Green Corridor Programme

Cross Lane, Royston

South Yorkshire Housing Association, in partnership with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC), is nearing completion of a highly energy efficient development of 22 family homes at Cross Lane, Royston. The development is part of the Green Corridor programme which has been in operation in Royston and surrounding neighbourhoods since 2003.

The four-bedroom and three-bedroom homes, that will be completed this September, are a combination of 18 rental and 4 shared ownership. Each of the 22 properties has been built to a contemporary design, combining both natural cedar cladding and brickwork with large picture windows to create a striking finish.

These new homes complement other improvement projects in Royston that have been funded by BMBC’s Green Corridor Team, such as property improvements, the reinstatement of the original coping stones at The Wells and the construction of pillars using bricks inscribed with the names of donors who contributed to the building of a chapel on the corner of Midland Road and Poplar Terrace.

SYHA Architects have designed the properties to Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, which means they benefit from a variety of energy efficiency measures. Each home has photovoltaic roof tiles to generate electricity from daylight, and high-levels of insulation to keep the heat generated within the home. Also, 18 of the 22 homes have rain water harvesting systems to feed all the non-drinking and non-bathing systems (toilets and outside taps).

The energy efficiency features on the new homes will help to significantly reduce household utility bills and help keep Royston green and clean.

Shared ownership homes are provided in this development and are an opportunity for people from the locality to take a step towards home ownership by purchasing a share of the equity in a property.
