South Yorkshire Housing Association are working in partnership with Rotherham Council (RMBC) and Bramall Construction to deliver 31 family homes in Kimberworth, Rotherham.
SYHA decided to hold a renaming competition for the development area, initially named Shrewsbury Terrace, inviting entries from local young people at Kelford School.
After an assortment of suggestions, the name Chiberworde Avenue was selected. Chiberworde is the original name for Kimberworth in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and it was felt that this name was unique and a fitting acknowledgement to the area.
Dee Hiley, SYHA Development Officer, said: ‘We are delighted that the name Chiberworde Avenue has been chosen for the new SYHA development. The young people from Kelford School will be able to look back in years to come and remember the day they put their stamp on the area’s history.’
The 31 new homes will be a mix of houses, apartments and bungalows; which will be available for both rent and shared ownership.
SYHA Architects have designed each of the properties to Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, which means they benefit from a variety of energy efficiency measures and have been built to a contemporary design, combining natural cedar cladding and brickwork to create a striking finish.
Each home has photovoltaic roof tiles to generate electricity from daylight, and high-levels of insulation to keep the heat generated within the home. Eleven of the homes also benefit from rainwater harvesting systems to feed all the non-drinking and non-bathing systems.
The energy efficiency features on the new homes will help to significantly reduce household utility bills and help keep Kimberworth green and clean.
