Everingham Place, Longley, Sheffield
This site was a previously derelict open space in the heart of the Longley area of Sheffield.
The area, surrounded by trees, had been severely vandalised and was becoming a security problem for existing householders. The space, however, offered tremendous potential to provide housing to meet local needs.
Extensive consultation with Sheffield City Council and LOCAL, the resident's association, highlighted a need to provide quality homes for the elderly in this area.
Alan Ingram, a Longley Neighbourhood Worker, was particularly instrumental in this process and provided helpful information which was used to secure funding for the scheme.
SYHA developed the scheme using a Design & Build package, comprising 20 two bed bungalows, 2 of which were designed for the disabled.
Work started on site at the end of August 2002 and took 14 months to complete.
The bungalows were designed to specifically meet the needs of the residents and are equipped with a 24 hour warden call system.
Most residents have relocated from the surrounding area and are delighted with the finished product.
Mr & Mrs Fowler and their daughter welcomed us into their new home when Steve Ellis, Development Director, officially opened the development on 15th December, 2003, joined by Tony Stacey, Chief Executive and other members of staff from SYHA, representatives from the planning supervisors for the scheme, LOCAL and Sheffield City Council.
