Fletchers Cottages, Selby

Selby District Council and South Yorkshire Housing Association handed over the keys of homes in a development of nine affordable rented properties in Barlby, on Wednesday 30th June 2004.

The Council has been working in partnership with South Yorkshire Housing Association to refurbish nine cottages adjacent to the Hazlewood Foods factory, which had previously been empty. Selby District Council facilitated the purchase of the homes by South Yorkshire Housing Association, in order for the redevelopment to take place.

Selby District Council Director of Community Services, Steve Martin, said "Selby District Council is committed to bringing empty homes back into use, to alleviate some of the pressure to build new homes in the district; it makes environmental and economic sense for us to redevelop existing buildings. I am really pleased we have been able to redevelop these properties in partnership with South Yorkshire Housing Association, and I would like to thank all of those involved, including Hazlewood Foods."

Chair of Selby District Council's Social Board, Cllr. Liz Casling commented "With the housing market continuing to boom in the Selby district, it is important Selby District Council offers help to those who cannot get onto the property ladder. We have a commitment to providing affordable homes throughout the district, and this redevelopment is an excellent example of how we can regenerate properties for the good of the whole community."

Chair of South Yorkshire Housing Association, David Hunt, added: "These properties will provide high quality homes for nine families in an area where house prices continue to rise dramatically. We are working with Selby District Council on a number of housing projects at the moment, to ensure suitable accommodation is available for people across the Selby district."
