I would like to do a Mutual Exchange
Some SYHA tenants have the right to swap homes with another tenant. This is called a mutual exchange. Mutual exchanges involve two or more tenants taking on the terms of each other's tenancy and swapping their homes.
Both secure and assured SYHA tenants have the right to exchange homes with other Housing Association or Local Authority tenants. If you are not sure what type of tenant you are have a look at your tenancy agreement or call our head office on 0114 2900 200.
How do I do a mutual exchange?
- You can advertise your home and search for people looking for an exchange on our mutual exchange register. You can do this by downloading a form that you fill in and return to us.
- Once you have returned the completed form to us we can search for possible matches. Most Local Authorities & other housing associations also have a register that you will be able to look at our put your details on.
- You can also find an exchange partner by putting adverts in local newspapers and on the notice boards of local shops and supermarkets.
What do I do once i've found someone to exchange with?
- You must always get written permission from all of the landlords involved before you go ahead and exchange. If you do not get permisison you may lose your home.
- Permission may be given with conditions, for example, on the condition that your rent account is clear or that tenant damage must be repaired.
