If you want to move home, there are various options open to you.
Transfer
As a resident you can apply for a transfer to move into another property with SYHA. To do so you need to fill in a transfer application form. You can get these from any of our offices, or click here to request one.
It is important that you give us full details of why you need rehousing and if possible give us any other supporting information with your application.
What happens to my transfer form?
We will access your form to find out if you need rehousing. We will then decide if we will be able to help you.
We will also check to see if you have broken any of the terms in your tenancy agreement. For example, we will check to see if you are behind with your rent. We will not accept you if you have broken your tenancy agreement, unless there are exceptional circumstances. We will not accept you onto our list if you have been violent to your partner or children, or if you have harassed someone because of their race or colour.
Where could I live?
Along with the application is an area list, where you can select where you would like to live. It is important that you put down all the areas you would consider. The more areas you choose the more likely it is that we will be able to help you.
Interviews and Home Visits
If we might be able to help you, we will invite you to the office for an interview. In some cases, we will visit you at home.
At the interview we will ask to see proof of your circumstances. For example:
Proof that you have custody of any children in your application
Proof of your pregnancy
Proof of your national insurance number
A form from your doctor to confirm any medical needs you may have
We will then award you points according to your housing need.
We will write to you to let you know the outcome of your application.
If I am accepted, how long will I have to wait?
It is impossible to say how long anyone will have to wait to be rehoused.
We cannot predict when particular properties will become available. We set half of our empty properties aside for the council or other organisations we have special agreements with.
When we do get an empty property, we usually offer it to the person on the waiting list (that includes transfer applicants) with the highest number of points, or to council referrals.
What to do if you need emergency re-housing
As South Yorkshire Housing Association cannot provide emergency housing, we recommend that applicants who are homeless, or those facing imminent homelessness (within 28 days) should always contact their local authority homeless department:
Sheffield Council Homeless Department:
0114 2735142 or 0114 2735046
(or 0114 2442441 after 4:30pm)
Rotherham MBC Homeless Section:
01709 382121
Barnsley MBC Homeless Section:
01226 773870
Doncaster MBC Homeless Section:
01302 862014 or 01302 862015
Looking for a Mutual Exchange?
If you are currently a Council or Housing Association tenant it may be possible for you to apply for a mutual exchange: This is where two (or more) tenants decide to swap their properties, and it can often be a much faster way of moving then applying to join a waiting list.
Our Sheffield and Rotherham offices (as well as some councils) keep lists of local tenants who are looking to move. You can view these, and apply to add your property to the list. If you find a possible match there will be details on how to contact the other party.
You will however always need the permission of the landlord(s) before swapping.
There are also Government recommended websites where you can register if you want to swap homes, even with someone in a different part of the country. Please note some of these websites may charge a fee to register.
