Are you or someone you care for living with Dementia? Are you struggling and looking for local support?

The Barnsley Dementia Support Service offers free advice and practical support to give you the confidence to live well, or care for someone living with Dementia.

We’ve got a range of free services that are tailored to your individual needs. So whether you’d prefer to talk with someone one-to-one at home, or sit down with people in a similar position as part of a group, we’re here if you need us.

Below are just some of the different types of services we provide across Barnsley.

One-to-oneTake a look at the support on offer from the Barnsley Dementia Support Service

Sometimes it helps just to have someone to talk to. All of our one-to-one sessions are run by the real experts – people who have lived, or cared for someone, with Dementia.

One of our volunteers can come and see you at a time and place that best suits you. It could be at home, at one of our offices or even at a coffee shop – it’s wherever you are going to feel most comfortable.

We’ll sit down with you an put together a personalised plan to help you live well and achieve your goals.

Wish List

Living with Dementia doesn’t mean you can’t achieve any goals or ambitions you have. Our Wish List gives you the opportunity to create new memories by trying something you’ve always wanted to do, but never got round to doing.

So whether it’s being a zoo keeper for the day or visiting a place you’ve never been to, just let us know.

If you or someone you know would like to make a wish, simply download this form, fill it in and send it back to us at bdss@syha.co.uk or call us on 0114 2900 200.

We’re also recruiting a team of Dream Makers who will work with customers to help make their wish come true! If you think you could help just let us know and get in touch by emailing volunteering@syha.co.uk.

Close By

If you are caring for someone with Dementia it can hard to find time just for you.

Close By gives you the chance to take a break and focus on you. The session is split into two, with the person you are caring for being at a separate session at the venue so you’re never too far away.

It’s a great chance to take a break, meet people who are in a similar position to you and make friends. You can try a range of creative activities, including art and music. If there’s something you want to try, just let us know!

Tour Days

The Barnsley Dementia Support Service isn’t the only support available locally – there’s lots of organisations offering different types of support in Barnsley.

Tour Days give you the chance to try new services and visit them with one of our experts.

The Tough Stuff

Being diagnosed with Dementia can be an overwhelming experience. There’s lots of information to take in and changes you may have to make to your lifestyle.

At Tough Stuff sessions we’ll examine the realities of living with, or caring for someone with Dementia. We’ll discuss how needs change over time and offer practical advice on overcoming challenges.

All of these sessions will be delivered by professionals and experts working in Dementia and you’ll be able to ask them any questions you might have.
