Re: Consultation on proposal for South Yorkshire Housing Association Limited to join Places for People

What’s happening?
South Yorkshire Housing Association is proposing to join Places for People.

Do I need to do anything?
Please read this letter to find out more about the partnership and how you can share your feedback about our proposal.

I am writing to you about a proposal for South Yorkshire Housing Association Limited (SYHA) to join Places for People (PfP). PfP is a Registered Provider of Social Housing, like SYHA, and we share similar strategic aims and values. In this letter, we refer to the proposal as a partnership with Places for People.

If the partnership goes ahead, as a SYHA customer, your landlord will remain the same and the conditions of your tenancy or lease would not change. If you receive other services and support from SYHA, these would not change.

As Alliance Housing Association (South Yorkshire) Limited is a subsidiary of SYHA, the partnership proposal and consultation applies equally to Alliance and its customers.

This letter shares more about the partnership and explains how you can share your feedback as part of the consultation. We have also answered some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the partnership.

The reasons for the partnership with Places for People

PfP is the UK’s leading Social Enterprise, and committed to building homes and communities where everyone is welcome and can thrive. By joining PfP, we can share resources and provide great homes and services. Working together, SYHA and PfP are stronger and can ensure further investment, influence and growth in South Yorkshire.

SYHA is also proposing the partnership to improve our financial position. This includes our ability to:

  • pay for repairs and maintenance in SYHA homes
  • pay bills, salaries, and anything else to keep the organisation running
  • ensure we have funds for building new social homes, investment and unexpected costs.

In the long-term, if we don’t secure a partner, we may not have the resources to provide services at the standard our customers expect and deserve.

If the partnership goes ahead, SYHA will become a subsidiary of Places for People Group Limited. A subsidiary is a company that is owned by another organisation.

What it means for you

The partnership would help us to continue offering good-quality homes and services. It would also provide access to more resources, investment and knowledge, which will help us to make improvements.

If this proposal goes ahead, your landlord (SYHA) and the terms and conditions of your tenancy or lease will remain the same.

SYHA and PfP are committed to making a positive difference to customers from both organisations. There will be no significant negative impact on SYHA customers, but there may be some short-term disruption to services as we start to implement improvements. Our FAQs provide more information about the partnership and how it might affect you.

How to take part in the consultation

The consultation period is from 16th July until 10th September 2025. This is an opportunity for you to share your views and questions about the proposed partnership. Your feedback will be shared with the SYHA Board when they consider whether to approve SYHA becoming a subsidiary of PfP.
