If you’re moving on to pastures new, here are the things you need to do – to ensure your moving is a stress free experience
Let us know before you leave
If you decide that you’d like to leave your SYHA home and end your tenancy, it’s important to let us have at least four weeks’ written notice.

How to return your keys to SYHA
Returning the house keys
When you move out, you’ll need to return all of the keys you have for the property including communal entrance & gate keys.
Return the keys – before 12 noon – on the day that your tenancy ends to the Wellington Street office.
If you’re struggling to return the keys to the office, give us a call and let us know – and we’ll probably ask you to send the keys back to us, in a secure package, recorded delivery.
If your plans change and you need more time
If something doesn’t quite go to plan after you’ve given your notice – and so you need to stay in your SYHA property longer – let us know right away.
If you claim Housing Benefit
Make sure you ask them to pay to the end of your tenancy. You may only be able to claim Housing Benefit for the property you are living in. If you leave the property before the tenancy ends and you cannot claim Housing Benefit you will be expected to pay the rent yourself.
Sometimes you can claim for an overlap in Housing Benefits during your notice period, please contact us for any advice of information you need to help you with this. Als check the information on our website about the changes of the Bedroom Tax and how it might affect you.
Before you lock the door for the last time…
Redirect your post (three weeks before you leave) – you can do this through Royal Mail , and let your bank, mobile phone provider etc. know your new address.
Let your utility providers (gas, water, electric, broadband etc) know that you are leaving, and make sure you take, and submit, your final meter readings on the day that you leave.
Check every nook and cranny and make sure you take everything with you! We hear from several tenants each year who completely forget to empty their treasures from the attic.
We know it’s obvious but we have to ask… please leave the house and garden clean, tidy and empty of rubbish – to help the new people feel happy and at home in their new house.
