My name is Leila, and I work within the Home Maintenance Team (HMT) as a Business Administration apprentice.

I’m currently doing a level 2 apprenticeship in business administration; however, I will be progressing on to level 3 at the end of the month, and have been with South Yorkshire Housing Association for over a year now. Just a few of the tasks which I do within my role are:

  • Assist the planners/co-ordinators within the HMT with scheduling in repairs
  • Produce and send letters to tenants containing information about what repairs we will be carrying out to their property and when
  • Collating finance receipts and organising them.

I’ve always been a practical learner, and felt that an apprenticeship would be the best way for me to start my career and make the most out of it. I enjoy learning as I work and feel that apprenticeships are the best way to do this as you not only gain skills, but also experience.

I felt that South Yorkshire Housing Association was the best place for me to do my apprenticeship as from the moment that I had my interview everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming towards me.

“I’ve found working and learning ‘on-the-job’ to be an amazing experience. I feel that I’ve learned so much already in just a year of being here, and despite the disruptions that the COVID-19 pandemic and working from home has caused, my experience has still been great! I’ve become a much more confident person, gained some amazing skills, and most certainly improved my knowledge.”

All the people who I have worked alongside so far during my apprenticeship (both at college and South Yorkshire Housing Association) have been so supportive. I’ve never been left to struggle with doing anything, my questions are always answered promptly, help is always offered to me when I need it and I feel like I’ve learned so much in just a year. Everyone has always been extremely friendly and helpful towards me, and I’ve had a great time working here so far.

I’m going to be progressing on to my level 3 business administration apprenticeship soon and I’m really looking forward to it! I could definitely see myself working here for a long time and I hope that I’m given the chance to do so, as it’s such an amazing company to work for. I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far, and I’m absolutely positive that I’ll continue to do so.

“Having Leila on board for the past year has helped my team manage the difficulties of the current pandemic restriction. Leila has been flexible in helping with any task and has taken an important role in keeping our customers up to date. This has freed up other members of the team to work in areas where their specialist knowledge has been needed.

An apprenticeship provides the opportunity to experience a functioning, real place of work with all the intricacies, relationships and stresses that are involved. This provides a great insight for apprentices and creates an excellent foundation for their future career prospects. It also provides a space to be able to openly ask questions and actively learn on the job.

Leila will soon be moving onto her L3 which will mean she is going to be with us for a further 18 months, something we’re all looking forward to.
