Cardboard Citizens is an innovative project which gives customers the chance to express themselves through theatre. The project has become a mainstay of our Moments of Joy programme and has seen us working alongside national touring company Cardboard Citizens to engage with our customers in new and creative ways.
Our 2015 season featured a play called ‘Benefit’ which focussed on welfare reform and what it meant for our customers. ‘Benefit’ allowed participants to explore barriers and issues and think about how they might overcome them by making positive changes.
We’ve now completed the second season of Cardboard Citizens and the project has allowed our customers to reimagine their own lives and tell their own own powerful and moving stories.
During the 2015 season we’ve worked with customers across Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield, performing at some of the regions biggest theatres including The Civic in Barnsley and The Space at Sheffield Hallam University, with the 2015 season culminating in a special performance at CAST in Doncaster.

“Mereille is a customer with our LivingWell project which works with customers with acute mental health problems in Sheffield. She told us how much she enjoyed being involved in Cardboard Citizens:
“I found out about Cardboard Citizens from my keyworker Karen. I wasn’t sure at first but I thought I’d give it a try because it was new and something different. I really enjoyed the experience and I could relate the subjects covered in the performance back to me as I claim benefits too. My favourite part was going onto the stage and getting involved in the performance. They asked me what could have been done differently and I said what I would have done. I’d recommend Cardboard Citizens to anyone.“
