In 2021, we hosted an online seminar to share more about how we created our Race Action Plan, our learning and experiences, and next steps. Thanks so much to everyone that joined us.

Below, we’ve divided the seminar into different chapters – together with some reflections from Nisa Chisipochinyi, our outgoing Race and Diversity Lead.

We’re currently recruiting for a new Race and Diversity Lead. Learn more about the role and apply.

“We are fortunate to have been able to receive feedback from our workforce which was true to their experience. This was not easy to hear – and the experiences were even more difficult to communicate – but they contributed significantly to the formation of the Race Action Plan. It was one thing hearing and listening to what people had to say in the spaces we are a part of, and another in knowing what to do with what we heard. What we knew with certainty was that we wanted to share the stories that were confirmed by our data in a way that would honour the people who shared them and inspire us all towards action. We chose to be transparent.”

“Although being anti-racist does not require rationalising, we created a short video setting the scene for why we created our Race Action Plan. Race is something we are now talking about openly, sharing the stories we have heard and committing action to achieving what we have set out in the plan. To take us on a journey together, we got together our key points from our findings and shared them in this video.”

“Unless we do the work, we will not get the results. The work does not belong to one person: something that became obvious to me early on is that it belongs to all of us. Unless you are, for example, equipped with the right language, you may not engage effectively in the work. ‘EDI’ work has always been everyone’s business, but not really anyone’s job to facilitate accountability – this has now changed for us.”

“We have taken tangible actions which we will continue to develop as we go. In wanting to ensure that our work is sustainable, laying the right foundations has taken a little longer than expected. This has helped us to take the time we need to ensure that what we’re doing is beyond superficial.”
