How to keep your home cool in hot weather

Hotter temperatures mean that many of our homes are at risk of overheating. The impacts of overheating can lead to a range of serious health-related issues, especially for people with chronic health conditions, older people, pregnant people, and young children. It is also associated with increased instances of mental health conditions, and loneliness and isolation.

As we experience more heatwaves and increased temperatures, it is important to think about how to keep our homes cool and safe to live in.

Shade the UK has launched a guide to Taking Care in Heat, and it can support you to make your home more comfortable during warmer weather. The advice includes ideas on how to…

  • use internal and external shading, like keeping curtains closed during the day to keep the sun out
  • keep your home cool naturally, by opening windows when it is cooler outside and keeping them closed during the day
  • minimise heat from everyday activities, like switching off appliances that are not being used.

There’s lots that you can do to make your home cooler – and Shade the UK also provide some great tips on taking care of yourself and others.
