Energy efficiency improvements 

To meet government targets on the energy efficiency of social homes, we must ensure that all SYHA homes are at least EPC band C by 2030. We plan to improve around 100 homes each year for the next three years, and to expand the programme as we get closer to 2030.

If your home is eligible for energy efficiency improvements, because it has rating below EPC C, the benefits will include:

  • A warmer and more comfortable home
  • Healthier living conditions
  • Lower energy bills and a home that is easier to heat
  • A reduction in your home’s carbon footprint.

How will you increase the energy efficiency of my home?

Examples of changes we make may to your home include:

  • Improving the level of insulation in your home to reduce the heat lost through walls, windows, doors and roof spaces
  • Improving the ventilation in your home so you don’t get issues with damp, mould and condensation
  • Upgrading the heating controls your home so you can manage the temperature within your home better and reduce energy usage
  • Adding new technologies like solar panels, batteries and heat pumps.
How do you decide which improvements you’ll make?

We’ve making the improvements in partnership with Seddon Construction. They will get in touch and carry out an assessment that identifies what we can do to reduce the amount of energy you use to heat your home.

This means that your home may receive different improvements to other homes in your neighbourhood.

When will you start work on my home?

The improvements will take place over the next five years, and we will be in touch when we are working in your area. If your home is eligible for improvements, Seddon Construction will carry out a survey to see what improvements can be made. If my home has improvements made to it, will they affect my rent?

No, your rent will not change because of the improvements. However, we hope your utility bills will be positively impacted by the upgrades.

Who is paying for the energy improvements?

We have secured a Warm Homes Social Housing Fund grant, which will be used alongside our own funds and other pots of funding. The improvements won’t cost you anything, and will not affect your rent or service charges.

If my home is already EPC C or above, is there anything I can do to reduce my energy bills?

There are some measures you can take yourself to save money on your energy bills, plus there is a lot of other energy saving advise on the Green Doctor website. We also have money saving advice on our website.

What is an Energy Performance Certificate?

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) tells you how energy efficient your home is. An EPC rates your home from A (very efficient) to G (inefficient). It also tells you how costly it is to heat and light your home, and what its CO2 emissions are likely to be. The Energy Saving Trust has lots of information about EPCs – including what they measure.
