Harry and his wife Susan have lived in their bungalow in Sheffield for eight years, having moved from their previous South Yorkshire Housing Association home. In total, they have been SYHA customers for 13 years since relocating to Sheffield from North East England.

For Harry, living in a bungalow was important as he was finding stairs increasingly difficult and wanted a home better suited to his needs. He particularly enjoys the bungalow’s large garden and the peace and quiet it provides.

Harry says:

“I love living here. It’s quiet, peaceful, and I’ve got a big backyard. I just love it.”

Now aged 71, Harry says the bungalow gives him and Susan the opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle and continue living independently in a home they are proud of.

Improving comfort and energy efficiency

Earlier this year, a programme of energy efficiency improvements took place at Harry and Susan’s home. The improvements included:

Solar panels, loft insulation, new double-glazed windows, new doors and updated heating controls.

Since the installation of the new windows and doors, Harry has noticed that draughts have disappeared and expects the home to feel much warmer and more comfortable during the winter months.

Lower energy bills

The installation of solar panels has also had a positive impact on household energy costs and they have already noticed a reduction in electricity costs since the panels were fitted.

The couple recently received a follow-up visit from a specialist who explained how the solar panels work and how to get the most benefit from the system.

Harry described the visit as “absolutely brilliant” and appreciated having the opportunity to fully understand the technology and its benefits.

Despite the scale of the improvements, Harry says the process was straightforward and stress-free. He praised both contractor teams for their professionalism, friendliness and high standards of workmanship. Harry was particularly impressed by how efficiently the work was carried out and felt well supported throughout the process.

“They were polite, nice, and they just got on with their work with no mess whatsoever, they were absolutely excellent.”

A home to feel proud of

As well as improving comfort and energy efficiency, the new windows and doors have enhanced the appearance of the property.

Harry feels proud of how his home now looks and says the improvements have helped it blend in with neighbouring owner-occupied homes.

Harry’s advice to other customers

For anyone who may be unsure about having similar work carried out, Harry said:

“It’s done quickly, cleanly, and the people who do the work are polite. Just get it done – you’ll feel the benefit from it. You really, really will.”

Looking ahead

Harry and his wife are delighted with the improvements made to their home and are looking forward to seeing the full benefits during the colder months.

From lower electricity costs and reduced draughts to a refreshed external appearance, the upgrades have helped make a home Harry and Susan already loved, even better.

“Me and my wife are really, really chuffed – I can’t fault it.”
