After two years out of work, Darren found himself at a low point. He lacked confidence, found it difficult to leave the house, and struggled with the idea of returning to employment. Even meeting new people or attending interviews felt overwhelming. Through support from the IPS (Individual Placement and Support) employment service, Darren was able to rebuild his confidence, recognise his strengths and successfully return to work.

Working alongside his IPS Employment Specialist, Mike, Darren received personalised support tailored to his goals, strengths and circumstances.

Together they:

  • Explored Darren’s previous work experience and transferable skills.
  • Updated and improved his CV.
  • Identified suitable job opportunities.
  • Built confidence around meeting new people and attending interviews.
  • Focused on Darren’s existing strengths rather than perceived barriers.
  • Worked at a pace that felt comfortable, with no pressure or deadlines.

Darren said:

“We talked about my previous experience and it made me realise what abilities I had and what I could offer.”

Darren successfully secured a role as a Passenger Assistant and Driver, supporting children with additional needs to travel safely to and from school and college.

The role provided the opportunity to spend time outdoors, meet new people and build positive relationships with children and their families.

Darren says:

“It’s been a new lease of life for me!”

Returning to work has transformed more than just Darren’s employment situation. He has also reconnected with friends, started making plans for holidays and the future. gained greater financial stability and purchased a new car.

Darren has also improved his confidence and wellbeing and developed a more positive outlook on life.

Darren now feels motivated, optimistic and able to look ahead with confidence:

“I’m planning holidays, making plans and things are getting better. It’s a new chapter.”

Darren believes the personalised approach made all the difference.

“It just built me up and gave me the confidence to get out and start living a normal life again.”

Today, Darren is thriving in work, reconnecting with people and activities he enjoys, and looking forward to the future with renewed confidence and purpose.
